Health can be strongly influenced by diet and lifestyle, and these influences can be very personal. The functional medicine approach aims to look at the big picture for each person, and work out what changes would be most important for them as an individual. This typically involves considering many pillars of health rather than just one area (like diet, stress, sleep, etc).
At Cambridge Functional Medicine, we think this approach gives a really valuable perspective on how to live healthily and well, so we are keen to spread the word. A root cause approach
Functional medicine works on a level of causes not symptoms.
What does this mean? Well, each symptom can arise for many different reasons, and we need to understand the cause to know how to move forward. For example, chronic headaches could stem from nutritional deficiencies, imbalanced hormones, food sensitivities, or many other causes – and each should be addressed in different ways.
No matter which body system is most obviously affected by symptoms (thyroid, gut, lungs, skin…), the first step is to understand the entire body, as symptoms arising in one area may have been triggered by a problem in another.
This ‘root cause approach’ is subtly different to how we may conventionally think about health and disease. There, body systems are often considered discretely. For example, if you had hypothyroidism, you might only look through a narrow lens at the thyroid.
However, the first step in functional medicine would be to understand the underlying causes for low thyroid function. This involves considering the whole body. Is there a nutritional deficiency? Is the stress system overburdened? Is there autoimmune damage to the thyroid – and if so, why has that happened, and how can it be reduced?
The root cause(s) may be in a separate system to the thyroid. For example, good digestive health is necessary for nutrient absorption and a healthy immune system, so some people may need to start there.
